Ingraham Trail

Five Day Trips Along the Ingraham Trail

The Ingraham Trail, or Highway 4, leads east from Yellowknife through lake-and-forest landscapes. A day trip can be short and focused or extend to several stops, but distance should never replace condition checks.

Before leaving, review current territorial road and park information, weather, daylight, wildfire notices, fuel, communications, and the equipment needed for the season.

1. A waterfall and trail outing

A signed trail to a waterfall can provide a focused half-day walk. Expect exposed roots, rock, mud, snow, or ice depending on conditions. Stay on the established route and keep clear of fast water and cliff edges.

2. A territorial-park lake day

A developed park can provide picnic, shoreline, paddling, or camping access when open. Reservations, fees, services, and permitted activities change by season; verify them directly before travel.

3. A short hike and picnic

Choose a route that matches daylight, experience, and the least-prepared member of the group. Pack food securely and leave no waste. Wildlife should be given distance and never fed.

4. A photography drive

Autumn colour, winter light, lake ice, and summer evenings can all change the trail’s appearance. Pull over only in legal, safe places where the vehicle is fully clear of traffic.

5. A guided seasonal experience

When conditions or equipment exceed your experience, use an authorized operator and ask what training, insurance, clothing, transport, and emergency planning are included.

Keep the plan smaller than the map

Two well-chosen stops are often more useful than racing between every marked lake and trail. Leave time to turn around safely and return to Yellowknife without pressure.
